Your First Visit
After you have booked your first appointment with us, you will be sent an intake form to fill out to help our physiotherapist learn more about your concerns. If you have any questions about the form or need to change your appointment, email hello@travelingphysio.ca.
Your physiotherapist will arrive with all of their equipment. This can include a portable treatment table, acupuncture supplies, exercise equipment, pelvic health supplies and PPE. Our physiotherapist can set up in any space in your home that your feel comfortable. The portable treatment table is small and fits in most small spaces (and in many cases isn’t utilized depending on the area of concern. During your first in-person visit, your physiotherapist will go through an assessment to learn more about your concerns. She will ask you questions about your past medical history, injuries and relevant surgeries. All of these questions help to formulate a hypothesis as to the cause of your difficulty. The physiotherapist may complete a hands-on assessment of various body parts that may be linked to your concern. This may include palpating over or under clothing (depending on your comfort level and the concern) and having you complete different movements. Your physiotherapist is here to help you; if any part of the assessment is uncomfortable or you do not wish to complete it, that is up to you! Your physiotherapist will work with you to figure out the best way to assess, diagnose and treat your difficulty. Treatment may take many forms including exercise prescription, manual therapy (hands on therapy), acupuncture, ergonomic adjustments and education. You will be given homework to complete to help improve your difficulties. Depending on your concern and goals, a follow-up appointment will be discussed. Once your goals are reached (reduced pain, improved movement etc) you will be discharged from physiotherapy care.
Pelvic floor initial assessments are similar in nature. There is the option to have a vaginal and/or rectal internal exam as part of the pelvic floor assessment. This is completely optional and is not a mandatory part of pelvic floor physiotherapy. An internal exam can give the physiotherapist a better idea of why you may be experiencing pelvic floor difficulties. One or two gloved, lubricated fingers are inserted into the vagina (one finger in the case of rectal exams). The internal muscles of the pelvic floor are palpated to determine if there are any difficulties. In addition, an internal exam may include assessment for prolapse and assessment of muscle function or “kegel”. Once again, an internal exam is optional and something you can discuss more with the pelvic floor physiotherapist.
A virtual physiotherapy assessment is completed over a secure video link that will be sent to you before your appointment. The physiotherapist will go over your intake form and discuss any concerns you have. They will conduct a similar examination as above, with the focus being on asking questions about your difficulties. You may also be asked to move around to demonstrate any movement loses or compensation patterns. At the end of the appointment you will be given homework to address your concerns.
Regardless of the method of initial assessment, payment is due following the appointment. You may pay by cash, cheque or e-transfer. We provide a receipt after payment is received. If you have extended health insurance, we can direct bill to most insurance providers.
